On April 29, the third lecture in the Alcuin Society Virtual Lecture Series 2021, Teacher, author and consultant in information security and emergency management, Guy Robertson lectured on Books, Fraud & Forgery

“Literary fraud and forgery are as old as the written word. The motives for these crimes include the desire for revenge, self-promotion, and above all for money. Many instances of forgery remain undetected or unacknowledged, and those who collect books and manuscripts must be circumspect when purchasing inscribed copies of works by noteworthy authors.

In Tennyson’s Ballpoint Pen: Observations and Warnings for Book Collectors and Librarians, Guy Robertson will discuss fraud and how it occurs in different institutions. He will concentrate on bogus signatures and other inscriptions (including marginalia) in collectable books.”
