The Ottawa Antiquarian Book Fair is going into its thirty-seventh edition. The Fair is an annual popular event of the Ottawa cultural scene with exhibits of rare and interesting books, prints, maps and ephemera from the inventories of Ontario and Quebec dealers. The Fair is a great opportunity to see and purchase an array of material in one location.
This year’s fair will have a number of expanded features. The Fair will be opened with a reading by Canada’s poet laureate George Elliott Clarke. He will be reading again at 1:00 p.m. There will also be a poet laureate’s display table within the fair, alongside bookseller exhibits. During the course of the day there will be short seminars, one on book restoration by Kyla Ubbink and one on epic poetry by George Elliot Clarke.
At 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. come listen to Kyla Ubbink of Ubbink Book and Paper Conservation speak about book conservation and some of the techniques she uses. The presentation will focus on practical techniques of caring for book collections such as how to affix loose pages, get rid of old book smell, and carry out basic cleaning, as well as a discussion of storage options and handling tips. Established in 2002, Ubbink Book and Paper Conservation works with collectors, small and large museums and archives, antiquities dealers and galleries to repair, restore, stabilize and preserve books, works of art on paper, vintage posters, maps, fine art prints, photographs, archival materials, and paper based artifacts.
