Long stitch books have been a straightforward and inexpensive way to bind handwritten and printed pages since the 14th century. This exposed sewing method binds the pages and cover together all in one, using long or linking stitches to connect them all. Reinforcement on the spine was provided by strips of leather, vellum, and wood. Students will make models based on historical examples using different sewing patterns.
Participants will learn how to use bookbinding tools, materials and their qualities. At the end of the course, students will have completed six (6) different variations of long and linking stitch books and acquired the skills to make more books for journals, sketchbooks, or artwork.
Suitable for beginners and all experience levels.

Instructor Bio: Andrew Huot is a book artist, bookbinder, printer, and conservator in Scarborough, ON, where he operates Big River Bindery. He holds a Masters in Book Arts from the University of the Arts. His artists’ books use photographs, linoleum cuts, and text to share the humorous side of everyday life around us. His artists’ books are in collections from the Art Institute of Chicago to Yale University. Andrew teaches online and in his own studio and for the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild.
