Album Structures
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 2, 3 & 4, 2017
This three-day courses explores traditional album structures and various ways of mounting photos, documents, and small works of art on album pages. Students will construct a number of albums, as time permits, including a Victorian style album using the checkerboard structure, an adhesive binding, and a stub binding. Stub binding is often used for the storage of documents of unequal length or manuscripts in which writing fills the entire page. Sample pages will be made as well, offering a number of methods for mounting photos, tintypes, or postcards, as well as the use of compensating guards to accommodate the thickness of folded maps or plates.

The Creative Book
Saturday, April 8, 2017
Lean towards experimental and unusual books – made or decorated with unusual media. Books that convey meaning – emotion and narrative in challenging and quirky ways. Artists’ books that possibily lack readable text, but are texturally rich, humorous – irregularly shaped books that can literally stand on their own and display well and then fold up into a convenient flat package. We will start with three basic structures – accordion, stab binding and single section codex – and then play with the possible variations and content ideas on each of the three basic books. Participants will be encouraged to experiment with shapes, pockets, covers, closures, windows, 3-dimensional decorative and calligraphic features. Many items will be on hand to share but if you have your own stash bring it along!

Chinese Thread Book

All materials and instructions will be supplied as a kit for a reasonable fee (yet to be determined). We will use various papers to make the book of two layers with eight compartments plus a paper or cloth cover stiffened with book board and wrapped with a cord or ribbon.
Participants may wish to supplement the kit with their own book cloth and special papers (e.g. decorative paste papers, handmade plain or coloured papers, marbled papers – even kids’ paintings or your own in harmonious colours and designs); bring some larger pieces around 30” and others of 12” square.
